Dear Friends,Church2

Thanks for looking at the Abundant Lite. I hope it is a small piece that keeps you in touch with St. Paul's. We have been offering it since the end of December 2006. The goal is to remind folks of the upcoming worship schedule, get you thinking about the Gospel or other scripture for Sunday, advertise some events, give an occasional brief information article, and provide a simple way for you to update your contact information with the parish office.

I have had a wonderful summer so far. Susan and I celebrated out 30th anniversary in Hawaii, visited  Rebecca and husband Brian in Denver, went 4 wheeling in Telluride, and relaxed for a day in La Jolla. We worshiped in familiar and unfamiliar locations, but found that God's Spirit was always there to welcome us. I rarely worship in another church without learning something that can help at St. Paul's.

As you travel and worship in other churches, think about bringing me a bulletin and let me know what really fed you.

Faithfully,

Fr. Andrew

        Sunday's Gospel
Knock and it Shall be Opened

Jesus was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples." He said to them, "When you pray, say:

Father, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread.
And forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us.
And do not bring us to the time of trial."

And he said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say to him, `Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; for a friend of mine has arrived, and I have nothing to set before him.' And he answers from within, `Do not bother me; the door has already been locked, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything.' I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, at least because of his persistence he will get up and give him whatever he needs.

"So I say to you, Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for a fish, will give a snake instead of a fish? Or if the child asks for an egg, will give a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"

Luke 11:1-13

From the Rector
Andrew Big Smile Seek. Ask. Knock.

Jesus teaches them to pray.

Nothing mysterious, nothing terribly profound. Did you know that Jewish People would have no problem praying this prayer if it we not so closely associated with Jesus?

After the prayer, the rest of the passage gets to what I think of as the meat. Seek. Ask. Knock.

There is a sense that does not come through in the English. It is the idea of keeping on. Keep on Knocking.

Jesus does not promise a magic phrase that gets us what we want. He invites us into a relationship with God in which we are invited to keep on asking what is on our hearts -- long after politeness would have us shut up. (Read Genesis 18.) We are invited to maintain the connection with God, even when we can't articulate our heart's desire.

God knows. God knows us.

Keep on Seeking.

Jesus teaches us to pray.

Sermons Available for Listening

Many of the sermons from our clergy are now available for listening online.

At the moment you can hear them at the  Abundant Lite Blog. Very soon you can hear them instead at the Listen to Sermons Blog.

Blog is short for Web log. It is a place to read or listen to content of particular interest to you. Generally, you are invited to offer your thoughts about what you have read or heard.

You can also subscribe so that you are notified when new content is added. However this type of subscription does not share your information with the church or others.

Within a week, all the sermons from this week and for the last 8 months will be available for your listening.
