Jeremiah 23:1-6

Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! says the LORD. Therefore thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people: It is you who have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. So I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the LORD. Then I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. I will raise up shepherds over them who will shepherd them, and they shall not fear any longer, or be dismayed, nor shall any be missing, says the LORD.

The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: "The LORD is our righteousness."

Camp Stevens -- Fire Recovery
The Alternative Christmas Tree Farm

Bishop's LodgeCamp Stevens in Julian, CA -- the Diocesan Camp for San Diego and Los Angeles suffered tremendous damage from the recent fires. Buildings were lost and approximately 30% of their forest was burned. It will take an estimated $1.5 million dollars to restore the camp -- beyond insurance coverage.

King or Shepherd?

Jeremiah, like most of the prophets did not have much use for kings. For that matter, they did not have much use for priests either. In general, when a prophet is preaching about you, you have been unfaithful. So let me correct that. Prophets have no use for unfaithful kings and priests.

However, prophets hold out hope that God will send a king for the holy people who will be up to the task of leading them faithfully. There were a few of them in the Hebrew Scriptures, but the prophets held out hope that there would be a special king who would rule like a shepherd.

We Christians believe that Jesus was this shepherd-like king; the one who would guide the people gently with a firm and faithful hand; the one who would spend himself for the people, not feed on them. We celebrate this King on the final Sunday of the Church Year. Faithful and forgiving, gentle and steadfast are the descriptors of King Jesus.

Come worship our King and Shepherd joyfully this weekend.

Luke 19:1-10

Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through it. A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich. He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way. When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today." So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him. All who saw it began to grumble and said, "He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner." Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, "Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much." Then Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost."

Town HallBishop's 3rd Town Hall a Success
More than 60 people from the Episcopal Churches in the Coachella Valley turned out to meet with Bp. James Mathes on November 13 at St. Margaret's in Palm Desert.

The bishop offered a meditation on St. Paul's Letter to the Philippians and its  joyful encouragement to God's mission. He discussed the response of the people of the diocese, the leadership support offered by his staff, and his own transformation as a result of engaging in this ministry. He gave an encouraging report on the Episcopal Church and the wider Anglican Communion. Finally, Bp. Mathes responded to questions posed by those who were in attendance.

In the future, two Town Halls each year are proposed.

Misunderstood?

I realized this week that I had always misunderstood Zacchaeus. Don't get me wrong. I have always liked and admired him, but I think I have ignored his sense of integrity.

When we read his statement in response to the criticism of the onlookers, it seems like a conversion. I have come to understand this differently. I think Zacchaeus is speaking in the present tense. He says, "I give half of my income to the poor," not "I will (in the future) give half ..."

He was ostracized, not because he was greedy or dishonest, but because of his job as a tax collector for the Romans.

He is an example of faith, because despite his exclusion, he still believes and places his hope in God. He assumed he would not be welcome, but he had to see Jesus and hear the good news that he preached.

Jesus is not saying that a bad person is good, but that the prejudice of the righteous blinded them to his goodness.

Join us this Sunday as we celebrate how Jesus invites us from the edges to offer our response to God's abundance.

Luke 20:27-38

Some Sadducees, those who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus and asked him a question, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, leaving a wife but no children, the man shall marry the widow and raise up children for his brother. Now there were seven brothers; the first married, and died childless; then the second and the third married her, and so in the same way all seven died childless. Finally the woman also died. In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had married her."

Jesus said to them, "Those who belong to this age marry and are given in marriage; but those who are considered worthy of a place in that age and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. Indeed they cannot die anymore, because they are like angels and are children of God, being children of the resurrection. And the fact that the dead are raised Moses himself showed, in the story about the bush, where he speaks of the Lord as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Now he is God not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all of them are alive.

Big Love or Big Life?

I have only read about the HBO show about polygamy, never watched it. As I understand it, the program moves beyond the fantasy to the nitty gritty of life with multiple wives. That's the idea, if you are focused on the wrong aspect of the relationship (wives x 3) you miss the places where life is churning.

The fellows who confront Jesus about multiple husbands are trying to make the innovative theology of resurrection seem absurd. They believe that resurrection just complicates life in heaven. For them, the only eternal life comes from having a child who would remember.

Jesus, offered not just memory, but eternal presence with God. You don't die a get remembered fondly, you are reborn for direct relationship with the divine. This is real life, abundant life, Big Life.

Luke 6:20-31

Jesus looked up at his disciples and said: "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. "Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. "Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. "Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets.

"But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. "Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. "Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. "Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets

"But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. Do to others as you would have them do to you."
