From the Rector
Shouldn't Our Prayers Be Private?
(Today's reflection is not about the Gospel for Advent II)
When
new people worship with us for the first time, it is not unusual for
them to comment on our practice of offering special prayers at the
Communion Rail. Almost everyone is surprised, many like it, some don't,
but everybody asks: Why?
I
have never seen another church that does this the way we do. Some have
prayer teams available after Communion to pray with those in need. Some
have stations for private prayers with a priest after Communion or
after worship. I have not been anywhere that prays in the public way we
do. However, many churches offer birthday or anniversary blessings or
announcements just prior to the Passing of the Peace.
It was my
reflection on birthday prayers that led to our current practice. I
wondered if people would be blessed by having prayers other than
birthdays offered in the sight and hearing of the worshiping
congregation. So I began to invite all sorts and conditions of prayers.
The key is having a concise request and an appropriate prayer.
The
reason that we do this out loud, is so that the congregation can join
in the prayer. This is specifically NOT a private prayer. This is a
prayer to be shared by the worshiping community. Each one in the pew
can attend to the prayer and add theirs as well. It is a powerful
experience to have the entire congregation share in a prayer and many
people experience the Holy Spirit stirring in them as a result. It
takes courage to ask for a prayer in this format. It takes a
willingness to be the Body of Christ for a brother or sister in need or
joy, to allow these prayers to bless those who would join in the
prayers.
It is rare that we do not offer these special prayers.
You are invited to join this prayer ministry as a full partner. We will
be blessed.
Fr. Andrew
If you have a brief story of unexpected blessing, share it with me. Give your name, email, and add your story in the comments section.

Featured Scripture
Mark 1:1-8 (NRSV) The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in the prophet Isaiah,
"See,
I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way; the
voice of one crying out in the wilderness:`Prepare the way of the
Lord,make his paths straight,'"
John the baptizer appeared
in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the
forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and
all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by
him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed
with camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate
locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed,
"The
one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to
stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with
water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
