From The Rector
|
| Look What We're Wearing!
The
reading from Galatians which we read this week has some amazing good
news for people who have been judged as "not good enough." The idea
that there is no "slave or free," no "Jew or Greek," and not "male and
female" is good news for those who were on the wrong side of the line.
I only wish that when I was being picked last for every team, that I
had heard that there was no tall or short, fast or slow, athletic or
un-athletic in God's world.
My
reality was that in my daily social life, I could not compete, let
alone win. I might have heard the idea that there was no competition
for God's abundant love as Very Good News. I grew to know that I was
loved. As an adult, I am concerned about a different issue that one
might get from this text.
If
all the divisions are gone, Jew/Greek, Male/Female, Fast/Slow, does
that mean that all diversity and individuality is also gone? In God's
realm will we all be a vanilla smoothie? Everyone so blended together
that anything that makes us unique is gone?
This
is what passes for diversity sometimes. "Let's all get along because we
are the same." This is often worked out as, "We are all the same, so
you need to act like US." I see something different in this passage.
Paul
says that through baptism, we are all "clothed with Christ" and all
become children of God and heirs of covenant promises. What this means
to me is that we are invited to see one another in the richness of our
differences and trust that God is comprehensive enough to embrace us
all. Tongues wag when 2 starlets walk the Red Carpet in the same dress.
I hope we might rejoice when we look out across the congregation and
see the real variety that is visible, anticipate the variety that is
not visible, and give thanks that each of us are wearing the same
Christ.
Join us in worship this weekend as we practice seeing one another with new vision.
Fr. Andrew

Featured Scripture
|
| Galatians 3:23-29
Now
before faith came, we were imprisoned and guarded under the law until
faith would be revealed. Therefore the law was our disciplinarian until
Christ came, so that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith
has come, we are no longer subject to a disciplinarian, for in Christ
Jesus you are all children of God through faith. As many of you as were
baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is no
longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no
longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. And if
you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according
to the promise. |

I Love To Tell The Story
|
| Our Church History
An exciting new project is taking shape to document the history of St. Paul in the Desert.
We are seeking photographs of the church building and its members from
the past 61 years. If you have photographs you would like to share
with the archivist, please tag the photos with your name, the year (if
you know it), and the names of the church members in the photos. Bring
the photos to the church and we will digitally scan them and return
them safely to you. In addition, we are looking for stories about the
building of the church, its history, and member anecdotes. Thank you
for helping us bring a bit of our church's past out of the attic and
into the light.

| Abundant Living Action Team |
| Deeper In Christ - Further In Mission
Over
the past year, the Abundant Living Action Team sponsored 2 very
successful Festive Dinners in support of our Financial Pledge Campaign.
We have offered 4 witnesses to God's love in October and November.
We've held an all parish open house that "recruited" 43 parishioners
for new ministry. We said "Thank You" to you all at the Parish
Appreciation Luncheon for all of your generous gifts of money, time and
talent.
Looking ahead to
the coming year, we look forward to welcoming you back at our "Welcome
Back" event on October 9th. We will be developing new programs to help you
identify and plan for Enduring Stewardship. Our goal is to embrace the
idea that Stewardship is about our relationship with God and one
another in all aspects of our life. Thank you all for your faithfulness in ministry!

| Summer Clergy Coverage
|
| Emergency & Hospital Clergy Availability
 During
the summer, when Fr. Andrew is on vacation, there will be clergy
coverage for emergencies. Below you will find information to guide you
in contacting clergy for response to personal emergency and hospital
needs.
- During the Parish Office Hours (Tues. - Fri. from
9:00 - 4:30 except for lunch 11:30-1:00) call the main office number
(760) 320-7488.
- Any other time, call (760) 323-4028 to be
connected to the Priest on Call. Usually, this will be Fr. Andrew.
When Fr. Andrew is not available, coverage will be provided by Fr. Fred
from St. Anthony's. If, when you call, you receive a message, please
leave your name, phone number, date and time.
If you are
scheduled for a hospital stay or end up in the hospital due to an
emergency, let us know or have a friend let us know. Our clergy tries
to visit people who are in the hospital, but often only find out after
they are at home. |

information. Please fill out the form found in the pew pocket and
