From The Rector
|
| When Jesus Sets His Face
This
week we read from the middle of Luke's Gospel. From here on, Jesus sets
his face towards Jerusalem. All the rest of his preaching and teaching
as he travels is aimed at Jerusalem and what awaits him there. This not
a constant complaint, but it is a clear focus for his teaching and for
what following him will mean and cost.
He
faces rejection and moves on. It is not rejection of his message, it is
rejection of him as an outsider. His disciples want to respond with
power, Jesus moves on and to a village where people are willing to
listen.
Seekers
come to him and want to join him. Jesus informs them rather rudely that
their enthusiasm has not prepared them for the real demands of
discipleship. They will be called to leave the settled life they know.
They will risk the family relationships that have been the bedrock of
their social world. Following him will demand their all.
We
are used to demanding challenges that promise advantages, success or
power. Jesus shakes up the seekers and his disciples (maybe us as well)
when he places demands on his disciples for the promise of service. His
teaching as he wanders will explain the abundant love of God and why
service is lifted up as the highest ambition.
Join us this week as we practice serving God and one another, and as we learn to serve the world and people God loves.
Fr. Andrew

Featured Scripture
|
| Luke 9:51-62 (NRSV)
When the days drew
near for Jesus to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. And
he sent messengers ahead of him. On their way they entered a village of
the Samaritans to make ready for him; but they did not receive him,
because his face was set toward Jerusalem. When his disciples James and
John saw it, they said, "Lord, do you want us to command fire to come
down from heaven and consume them?" But he turned and rebuked them.
Then they went on to another village.
As they were going along
the road, someone said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." And
Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests;
but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head." To another he said,
"Follow me." But he said, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."
But Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead; but as for
you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God." Another said, "I will follow
you, Lord; but let me first say farewell to those at my home." Jesus
said to him, "No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit
for the kingdom of God."

Church Security Breach |
| Theft At St. Paul's
A recent theft at the church necessitated changing the locks on the doors of the various buildings on the church campus. If
you were issued a church key and still have need of one, please see Br.
Michael-Gregory Norrie in the parish office (the office is open Tuesday
through Friday, 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. - closed on Mondays and for
lunch 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.).
Note:
In order to reduce liability and risk, we are only issuing keys to
those individuals who regularly need them for their specific
ministries. |

I Love To Tell The Story
|
| Our Church History
An exciting new project is taking shape to document the history of St. Paul in the Desert.
We are seeking photographs of the church building and its members from
the past 71 years. If you have photographs you would like to share
with the archivist, please tag the photos with your name, the year (if
you know it), and the names of the church members in the photos. Bring
the photos to the church and we will digitally scan them and return
them safely to you. In addition, we are looking for stories about the
building of the church, its history, and member anecdotes. Thank you
for helping us bring a bit of our church's past out of the attic and
into the light.

2010 Vestry Action Plans
|
|
These plans are the result of our May Retreat and were affirmed at the May 27, 2010 Vestry Meeting.
- Create a comprehensive Master Plan focusing on facility needs in order to prepare for maintenance, repairs and upgrades.
- Create a 2-year plan for reinstating the position of Associate Rector.
- Create a plan for more effective outreach to people in need.
- Develop
a Personnel Committee to meet with Father Andrew to review and evaluate
current personnel needs and make a recommendation back to the Vestry.
- Continue
to develop our Welcoming Committee so that we might have a more
effective welcome of first time worshipers and follow-through to
membership.
