From The Rector
|
| Welcome to Nain - Witness Compassion
In
1994 I was in Indianapolis for the General Convention of the Episcopal
Church as an observer. Integrity, an organization supporting full
inclusion of Gays and Lesbians in the church was having a service to
celebrate their 20th Anniversary. Louie Crew preached a sermon titled, " Welcome to Samaria". He spoke about what it meant to be an outsider in his church, like the people of Samaria. He pointed out that Jesus reached out to Samaritans and that being an outsider meant that Jesus was always drawing you in. Nain was a town that we think was about a days journey from Capernaum. In Capernaum, Jesus had been sought to heal the beloved servant of a foreign soldier. He did. In
Nain, Jesus sees the funeral of a Jewish widow's only son and "he had
compassion for her." He touches the bier and invites the young man to
live. The mother and son are restored and the people have witnessed the
mighty act of a prophet. And they witnessed the power of compassion. There
are many ways in which God's abundant love is made real by Jesus in the
Gospels. This story reminds us that Jesus seemed to be especially
attuned to people who were on the outside or on the edge of being
outside, the people who occupy the margins. In that culture, being a
widow with no family, especially a son, was a short walk to being as
good as dead. Please don't get sidetracked by the son who is
brought back to life. The mother holds the center of Jesus' focus.
Jesus has reached into the margin of life and death and given her new
life. This is our call. Travel in the margins. See with
compassion. Joyfully give life to those you touch. Bring Jesus into
your story. Join us this weekend as we explore Jesus' compassion and practice God's abundant life. Fr. Andrew

Featured Scripture
|
| Luke 7:11-17 (NRSV)
Soon after healing
the centurion's slave, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his
disciples and a large crowd went with him. As he approached the gate of
the town, a man who had died was being carried out. He was his mother's
only son, and she was a widow; and with her was a large crowd from the
town. When the Lord saw her, he had compassion for her and said to her,
"Do not weep." Then he came forward and touched the bier, and the
bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, rise!" The
dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother.
Fear seized all of them; and they glorified God, saying, "A great
prophet has risen among us!" and "God has looked favorably on his
people!" This word about him spread throughout Judea and all the
surrounding country.

Abundant Living Action Team |
| Deeper In Christ - Further In Mission
Over
the past year, the Abundant Living Action Team sponsored 2 very
successful Festive Dinners in support of our Financial Pledge Campaign.
We have offered 4 witnesses to God's love in October and November.
We've held an all parish open house that "recruited" 43 parishioners
for new ministry. We said "Thank You" to you all at the Parish
Appreciation Luncheon for all of your generous gifts of money, time and
talent.
Looking ahead to the coming year, we look forward to
welcoming you back at our "Welcome Back" event on October 9th. We will
be developing new programs to help you
identify and plan for Enduring Stewardship. Our goal is to embrace the
idea that Stewardship is about our relationship with God and one
another in all aspects of our life.
Thank you all for your faithfulness in ministry!

Help is Needed |
| Absence of Sexton
Joe Mckee, our Sexton will be off this next weekend, June 11-13, and help is needed to prepare the church for worship and secure it following.
If you are interested, please contact Joe by email today or Friday the 4th so that he can connect with you this weekend. If you call the Parish Office on Friday, he should be able to get back to you. 760-320-7488 x 0.
There will be 2 more weeks when Joe is off this summer and it would be good to have several people who can help.
Thanks.

Altar and Narthex Flower Requests |
| Flower Sponsor Information
 New
altar and narthex flower request charts have been placed on the
boards in the parish hall. If you already signed up for flowers,
your name is still on the date you had requested. We have had
requests for a second narthex sign-up area since we have two tables
in the narthex. Starting June 1, we will now be able to provide that
request. There has been some confusion on the verbiage of, "in
memory of" and "in thanksgiving for". We have tried to make it
clearer by indicating that it is either "in memory of" OR "in
thanksgiving of". Please circle which verbiage works for your
request. The cost for the flowers remains the same: Altar flowers:
$75,
narthex: $55,
centerpiece (Easter, Pentecost, Christmas) $175,
Budding plants (Easter): $60,
and palms (Palm Sunday): $55.
If you have questions, contact Valerie at 760-320-7488 ext. 227 or
email at vjwinters@dc.rr.com. |

Altar Guild Ministry |
|
 The Altar
Guild Ministry is
comprised of women and men dedicated to caring for the church and
altar. They work in teams that rotate weekly so that each member
serves approximately one time per month. Some of the
responsibilities are: -
Preparing the Church and welcoming to those attending all services.
-
Setting
up the altar for each service and cleaning up following services.
-
Caring for the communion vessels and the linens used during the services.
Most
of our duties are done behind the scenes and by people attending
our services. It is the dedicated service of the men and women of the
Altar Guild that makes our worship services happen smoothly.
The
Altar Guild is ready to welcome new members to this very rewarding
ministry. No experience is necessary. Training is ongoing. Contact
Kathy Kilmer at 760-325-0332 (kmkcc@aol.com). |

ECW Prayer Shawl Ministry
|
| The Prayer Shawl Ministry
continues to cast, purl and interweave
with prayer every strand of yarn they can get their healing hands on
to make prayer shawls. This ministry can use your help with acquiring
yarn. Please donate yarn sitting in a closet from an unfinished
project; purchase a few skeins of yarn; keep an eye out for skeins of
yarn at yard sales and thrift stores that you can buy to donate, or
donate money to buy yarn by placing money in the white giving
envelopes, located in the pew pockets, and write "yarn" on the
envelope. If you have yarn to donate, you may leave it in the "Yarn"
basket or bring it to the Parish Office.

Desert
SOS is
the new name for the SOS program that is now permanently operating
out of Roy's Desert Resource Center in the North Palm Springs
Business Park. The initial phase of St. Paul's involvement is our
commitment to provide and serve dessert on the first and third Monday
evening of each month to the 60 (more or less) men, women and
children enrolled in the Desert SOS program. Sign-up sheets (with
additional information and specific guidelines) are posted in the
Parish Hall for those of you who would like to serve and/or provide
desserts on those select Mondays. (Our June dates are the 7th
and 21st.)
 Well
in the Desert provides daily nutritious hot meals, emergency food assistance,
weekly supplemental food distribution and a wide array of social
services through case management and advocacy to those affected by
poverty, including the working poor, the homeless, seniors, the
handicapped and others in need throughout the western end of the
Coachella Valley. St. Paul's serves as a host site for this
non-profit organization to provide hot meals one day a week while the
Well in the Desert is seeking a new permanent location. |
