|
| Martha and Mary: A lesson in Hospitality
This
week's gospel is frequently used to teach a lesson about how
important it is not to get so busy that we forget to spend quiet time
with Jesus. And while I think this is a good lesson, I have a
feeling we may be missing the point of what Jesus is talking about
when he tells Martha that her sister, Mary, has chosen the "better
part".
What
is often not addressed is that both Jesus and Mary were committing a
social taboo. In that day and culture women could serve men, but it
was inappropriate for them to join in with them the way that Mary
did. They were not supposed to be taught by the rabbis or sit in the
room with a bunch of men discussing the Torah. People hearing this
story back in the day would have been much more shocked about Mary
assuming the role of a disciple than her not helping in the
kitchen...and that is precisely what I think Jesus was referring to.
As
usual, Jesus was turning things upside down. He liberates Mary from
her socially defined status of inferiority and marginalization. And
by following Jesus, not only was Mary transformed, but the world in
which she lived was transformed as well.
Through
Mary, Jesus is denouncing the social, political and religious
structures that do not practice God's radical hospitality - the
sort of hospitality that overcomes injustice and is grounded in love
and mercy and compassion. I think Jesus was saying Mary had boldly
chosen to take hold of this justice he had offered to her by allowing
her to join him and his disciples. The justice was hers now and he
would not take it away from her. I would even go so far as to say
that Martha saw what was going on and was not being honest with Jesus
about what was so upsetting to her - perhaps she was not even aware
of the cause of her anxiety. Jesus obviously did know what was
upsetting Martha, which explains why he answered her the way he did.
He knew Martha was being the voice of the status quo that resists
change, even "just" change.
The
lesson here is not that reading the Bible or praying is superior to
cooking a meal or cleaning house. As followers of Jesus, we are not
only invited to partake
of God's radical hospitality but we are called to practice
it
by seeking justice for those in the margins, challenging
discrimination wherever we see it, and transforming our relationships
so that they reflect the love of Christ.
Join
us in worship this weekend as we respond to the invitation to both
partake of and practice radical hospitality as disciples of Jesus.
Brother
Michael-Gregory Norrie, CTG

Featured Scripture
|
| Luke 10:38-42 (NRSV)
As Jesus and his
disciples went on their way, Jesus entered a certain village, where a
woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named
Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to what he was saying.
But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and
asked, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the
work by myself? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her,
"Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there
is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will
not be taken away from her."

I Love To Tell The Story
|
| Our Church History
An exciting new project is taking shape to document the history of St. Paul in the Desert.
We are seeking photographs of the church building and its members from
the past 71 years. If you have photographs you would like to share
with the archivist, please tag the photos with your name, the year (if
you know it), and the names of the church members in the photos. Bring
the photos to the church and we will digitally scan them and return
them safely to you. In addition, we are looking for stories about the
building of the church, its history, and member anecdotes. Thank you
for helping us bring a bit of our church's past out of the attic and
into the light.

A Letter from Kathy Kilmer
|
| | To My Dear Friends at St. Paul's,
I
would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to all those who
contributed to my gift fund and offered words of encouragement and
prayers following the recent theft of my purse from the Sacristy while
I was serving at the 10:30 am service on June 20th.
Since
I lost everything including my home and car keys and had to have all
the locks on my home changed as well as my car re-keyed, my losses were
significantly greater than just what I had in my purse, and your
generous contributions to the gift fund on my behalf were a significant
help to me in that respect. This was truly a surprise for me and
something I never expected but was so very much appreciated.
Thank you again, and may God bless you all. Kathy Kilmer
