From The Rev. Canon Victoria Hatch
|
| "So
it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not
rich toward God." Luke
12:31
Have
you been following the story about the city of Bell in Los Angeles
county? It really was appalling to read about the salaries received
by public officials is the tough times we've all experienced of
late. 'Vanity of
vanities..."(Ecclesiastes
1:2)
It seems to me that over the past several years, greed has raised its
ugly head more often than we want to think about it. First it was the
housing market or Real Estate, then the Banking industry and Wall
Street investors. It is as if everyone thinks they deserve a share of
the pie without having to work for it or recognizing their
responsibility for those less fortunate or needful of assistance.
This
journey to Jerusalem that we find ourselves on, is full of surprises.
Who would have thought that consumerism, such a part of 21st century
life, would be an issue for 1st century Palestine. You'd think that
after the turmoil of the past several years we would have learned our
lesson. However, deep within us remains that misconception that we
are capable of saving ourselves. If we just have the right IRA or
401K, we will gain peace and security.
Jesus
in the Gospel lesson this week, reminds us that it is not wealth that
is at issue, but what we do with the gift which God has given us.
Several weeks ago, I used the "E" word, Evangelism, well this
week I may use the "S" word, Stewardship. How do we understand
the gifts of Time, Talent and Treasure that God bestows upon each of
us and which we are called through our Baptism to offer back for the
up-building of God's Kingdom. Jesus is clear that we are
responsible for our behavior and that having lots of "stuff" will
not gain us security or a sense of peace.
Join
us on Sunday as we explore God's call to us to offer back a portion
of all that God has given to us.

Featured Scripture
|
| Luke 12:13-21 (NRSV)
Someone in the crowd said to Jesus, "Teacher,
tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me." But he said
to him, "Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator over you?"
And he said to them, "Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds
of greed; for one's life does not consist in the abundance of possessions."
Then he told them a parable: "The land of a rich man produced abundantly.
And he thought to himself, `What should I do, for I have no place to store
my crops?' Then he said, `I will do this: I will pull down my barns and
build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And
I will say to my soul, `Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years;
relax, eat, drink, be merry.' But God said to him, `You fool! This very
night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared,
whose will they be?' So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves
but are not rich toward God."

| John Westaway Honored |
| John Westaway is Received as an Associate Member of The Community of the Gospel
St.
Paul's parishioner John Westaway was received as an Associate Member of
the Community of the Gospel in a ceremony on July 21 at the Community's
Convocation in Appleton, Wisconsin. On hand to witness John's
reception was Br. Michael-Gregory Norrie from St. Paul's, a professed
member of the Community, who renewed his vows along with other members
of the CTG. As an Associate, John will be involved in a year-long
discernment process to test a call to religious life and see if the
Community of the Gospel is a good fit for him. Associates follow a
formation plan that includes being involved in Community interaction,
building their lives around the Community's values, and shaping their
own personal Rule of Life. At the end of the year, if both John and
the Community feel that a continued association with the Community of
the Gospel would be blessed, he may ask for full commitment to the
Community and make his profession of vows. The Community of
the Gospel is a non-residential, dispersed Christian Community formed
under the Canons of the Episcopal Church, whose members apply basic
monastic principles to everyday living. The Community is open to any
person over the age of 21, single or partnered, who is a communicant
member of the Episcopal Church. Members live and work in various parts
of the country and come together for Convocation twice a year. Full
members of the Community may take a religious name, use the title
"Brother" or "Sister," and have voting rights on issues affecting the
general welfare of the Community. The Community's mother house is
located in the Episcopal Diocese of Fond du Lac in Appleton, Wisconsin.
The Rt. Rev. Russell Jacobus, seventh Bishop of the Diocese of Fond du
Lac in the Episcopal Church, is the Episcopal Visitor.

I Love To Tell The Story
|
| Our Church History
An exciting new project is taking shape to document the history of St. Paul in the Desert.
We are seeking photographs of the church building and its members from
the past 71 years. If you have photographs you would like to share
with the archivist, please tag the photos with your name, the year (if
you know it), and the names of the church members in the photos. Bring
the photos to the church and we will digitally scan them and return
them safely to you. In addition, we are looking for stories about the
building of the church, its history, and member anecdotes. Thank you
for helping us bring a bit of our church's past out of the attic and
into the light.
