| From The Rector |
| Do This and You Will Live
I
hate it when I have a GOTCHA and it goes to waste. I have been
embarrassed when I thought that I had a question that could showcase my
overwhelming abilities and razor sharp intellect, only to find that I
had misunderstood some basic facts.
The lawyer is looking to
GOTCHA Jesus. He wants Jesus to go out on a limb and tell him something
that he can pick apart and use against him. "What must I do to inherit
eternal life?"
Instead of giving him an answer, Jesus asks him
how the scriptures have informed him about eternal life. The man
answers with what is known to many of us as the Great Commandment -
love God and neighbor. Jesus replies that this will do.
I can imagine the fellow sputtering for a moment. There is nothing he can use against him.
Sometimes
we avoid the simple stuff. We avoid it because: Anybody can do that, or
It does not seem dramatic, romantic, or dangerous enough to be really
special. Moses ran into the same problem. When he was teaching the
people of God what was required to be faithful he noted that it was not
exotic, or distant, or overly demanding. What is required is a way of
life.
Do this and you will live. Love God and love your neighbor.
This
is something that is not much good after the fact. Many folks want
their faith to be like an insurance policy, but one they buy after they
have an accident. Jesus understands the requirement to be a way of life
and a way of relationship, not a loophole.
The simplicity of
Jesus reply, Do this and you will live, beg lots of questions. I don't
think Jesus is much concerned about personally scoring my attempts at
living. I believe that Jesus is much more interested in inviting me to
give myself to a life of love and neighborly caring.
Join us as we practice this invitation in our worship this weekend, I promise you a GOTCHA-free experience.
Fr. Andrew

Featured Scripture
|
| Luke 10:25-37 (NRSV)
Just then a lawyer
stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he said, "what must I do to inherit
eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written in the law? What do you
read there?" He answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all
your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and
with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." And he said to him,
"You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live."
But
wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"
Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and
fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went
away, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that
road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. So likewise
a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other
side. But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw
him, he was moved with pity. He went to him and bandaged his wounds,
having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal,
brought him to an inn, and took care of him. The next day he took out
two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, `Take care of him;
and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.' Which
of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into
the hands of the robbers?" He said, "The one who showed him mercy."
Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."

I Love To Tell The Story
|
| Our Church History
An exciting new project is taking shape to document the history of St. Paul in the Desert.
We are seeking photographs of the church building and its members from
the past 71 years. If you have photographs you would like to share
with the archivist, please tag the photos with your name, the year (if
you know it), and the names of the church members in the photos. Bring
the photos to the church and we will digitally scan them and return
them safely to you. In addition, we are looking for stories about the
building of the church, its history, and member anecdotes. Thank you
for helping us bring a bit of our church's past out of the attic and
into the light.
