From The Rev. Dr. D. David Clemons
|
| + Saint Paul the Hermit + Palm Springs + CA +
 We
have been journeying with Jesus and the twelve to Jerusalem for seven
Sundays by now. You may have noticed the mood conveyed in the Gospel
readings has grown darker and more anxious the closer they get to their
destination. Today Jesus decides to address the rising tension directly
with an assurance that is one of the most positive and generous in the
New Testament. "Fear not little flock, for it is your Father's good
pleasure to give you the kingdom." The kingdom God is pleasured
so highly to give us is nothing less than Christ's reign of justice,
peace, love, and joy around us and/or in our hearts. He spent his
whole public ministry in bringing that kingdom to those people and
places that needed it the most and expected it the least. As the
greatest seat of corrupt power politics and self-righteous religion
accessible to him, Jerusalem had to be the city of his final destiny. Jesus
became notorious for his willingness to associate with sinners, whores,
and tax collectors for a reason. That reason, I think, was because it
was these considered lowest and least worthy who could most appreciate
Jesus' invitation for them to enter into the unconstrained joy and
expansive freedom of the kingdom. Jesus also had a reason for going
out of his way to come into contact with the ill considered most
unclean by everyone else. The reason was their abject emptiness
unreservedly ready to be filled; the reason: their limitless capacity
for gratitude. Jesus invites you
to experience the good pleasure of his reign this and every Sunday at
St. Paul's.

Featured Scripture
|
| Luke 12:32-40 (NRSV)
Jesus said to his
disciples, "Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father's
good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions, and give
alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing
treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For
where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
"Be
dressed for action and have your lamps lit; be like those who are
waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that
they may open the door for him as soon as he comes and knocks. Blessed
are those slaves whom the master finds alert when he comes; truly I
tell you, he will fasten his belt and have them sit down to eat, and he
will come and serve them. If he comes during the middle of the night,
or near dawn, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves.
"But
know this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief
was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also
must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour."

Parish Office Lobby Update
|
| The Couch Springs have Sprung
The
parish office lobby is in need of updated furniture. The couch is
extremely difficult to get up from. The tables are very worn and don't
match and the chairs are actually office chairs. We would like to
present a better first impression of our parish offices. If anyone has
more updated furniture that they would like to donate to the parish
offices, it would be greatly appreciated. |

I Love To Tell The Story
|
| Our Church History
An exciting new project is taking shape to document the history of St. Paul in the Desert.
We are seeking photographs of the church building and its members from
the past 71 years. If you have photographs you would like to share
with the archivist, please tag the photos with your name, the year (if
you know it), and the names of the church members in the photos. Bring
the photos to the church and we will digitally scan them and return
them safely to you. In addition, we are looking for stories about the
building of the church, its history, and member anecdotes. Thank you
for helping us bring a bit of our church's past out of the attic and
into the light.
