From The Rev. Canon Victoria Hatch
|
| Luke
12:49-56 Several
weeks ago, someone on their way into Church, said to me,"no hell
fire in your sermon I hope, as it's too hot already!"
Well,
this week, we can't escape the hell fire; because, the words come
out of Jesus' mouth.
These
words of judgement come in the midst of his journey to Jerusalem.
They seem to stand in sharp contrast to the Jesus we find in so much
of scripture, a Jesus of peace and harmony, of cooperation and
reconciliation. These words are in fact in sharp contrast to the
"sunday school" image we have of the meek and mild Jesus.
The
issue here is the humanity of Jesus. For most of us, we have no
problem with the divinity of Jesus. We have no trouble saying,
Jesus is God's Son; however, we do tend to have a certain degree
of difficulty with Jesus' humanity. We proclaim every Sunday, in
the Nicene Creed, "he was born of the Virgin Mary,...". It is a
basic tenet of the Christian faith that Jesus is both fully human and
fully divine. There have been countless heresies over the centuries
which have questioned this precept; but, the Church councils over the
centuries have continued to stand firmly on the conviction that Jesus
is both human and divine.
It
has always been easier to keep Jesus at arms length, "out there",
rather than to embrace his humanity; where Jesus shows emotion and
acts like one of us. Here Jesus seems both angry and frustrated,
something with which most of us can identify.
Jesus'
frustration arises from the reality that the signs of the Kingdom of
God are all around. The disciples and the multitudes fail to
acknowledge the signs, thereby missing the opportunity to enter into
and receive the fullness of life offered by God through Jesus. It
seems Jesus wants freedom, peace and fullness of life for all. When
we fail to heed the invitation, is not Jesus' frustration
warranted? This
is not the end of the story, the author of the letter to the Hebrews
reminds us "to run with perseverance the race that is set before
us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith..."
(Hebrews 12:1-2)
We
may face obstacles in our lives but because of the community of faith
"this great cloud of witness" which surrounds us, are we not able
to endure and to persevere? God in Christ continues to invite us to
follow; and, in remembering that we are not in this alone but
surrounded by those who have gone before us and those who journey
with us, we are able to persevere and journey onward.

Featured Scripture
|
| Luke 12:49-56 (NRSV)
Jesus said, "I came to bring fire to the
earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! I have a baptism with
which to be baptized, and what stress I am under until it is completed!
Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell
you, but rather division! From now on five in one household will be
divided, three against two and two against three; they will be divided:
father against son
and son against father,
mother against daughter
and daughter against mother,
mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law
and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."
He
also said to the crowds, "When you see a cloud rising in the west, you
immediately say, `It is going to rain'; and so it happens. And when you
see the south wind blowing, you say, `There will be scorching heat';
and it happens. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the
appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret
the present time?"

Parish Office Lobby Update
|
| Ask and you shall receive... Two
generous parishioners, who wish to remain anonymous, "heard the call"
that we needed refreshed furniture for the parish office lobby. They
have purchased a new love-seat in a neutral tone, two olive-green
occasional chairs, an end-table to go between the chairs with a lamp, a
coffee table, and a pole lamp to go next to the love-seat. Stop by and
appreciate your new parish office decor. A great BIG THANK YOU to these parishioners! |

I Love To Tell The Story
|
| Our Church History
An exciting new project is taking shape to document the history of St. Paul in the Desert.
We are seeking photographs of the church building and its members from
the past 71 years. If you have photographs you would like to share
with the archivist, please tag the photos with your name, the year (if
you know it), and the names of the church members in the photos. Bring
the photos to the church and we will digitally scan them and return
them safely to you. In addition, we are looking for stories about the
building of the church, its history, and member anecdotes. Thank you
for helping us bring a bit of our church's past out of the attic and
into the light.
