From The Rector
|
| Selling the Sweepings
Now Amos was a prophet!
I bet he could not get work here in the desert. (Or anywhere else.)
The
people to whom he spoke told him to go earn his bread somewhere else.
Leave them alone. He was upsetting the king and the people. The
lesson we read this weekend is specifically about how displeased God is
when "good" people ignore or abuse the poor, the needy, and the
stranger in the interest of making a living. The
lack of concern for brothers and sisters in need is as if the "good"
people had gone out of their way to target them. They were "buying ...
the needy for a pair of sandals." They were making the measure of grain
small and the profit great at the expense of the weakest and most
vulnerable.I don't
imagine that Amos would be well received on Wall St. these days, nor in
Washington, nor in Sacramento. How would he be received among us?Waiting For You | It
fills my heart with joy to see the baskets of food and clothing
overflow as we offer them each Sunday. It make my heart break to know
that more and more people are becoming poor each day. This affects our
members like anyone else.I
believe that God is calling us to combine our heartfelt experience of
God's Abundant Life and our awareness of the increasing need all around
us. Then with that combined vision we are to offer hope and take
actions that make a difference. Giving is one action. Helping is one
action. Hiring is one action. Welcoming is one action. Raising your
voice in support of those who are most at risk is one action.Underlying
all this is the prophet's belief that God is concerned for all,
especially those who are most in need and who have the smallest voices.Join us in worship this weekend and bring something to help those in need - in your hand and in your heart.Fr. Andrew |

Featured Scripture
|
| Luke 16:1-13 (NRSV
Jesus said to the
disciples, "There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were
brought to him that this man was squandering his property. So he
summoned him and said to him, `What is this that I hear about you? Give
me an accounting of your management, because you cannot be my manager
any longer.' Then the manager said to himself, `What will I do, now
that my master is taking the position away from me? I am not strong
enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. I have decided what to do so
that, when I am dismissed as manager, people may welcome me into their
homes.' So, summoning his master's debtors one by one, he asked the
first, `How much do you owe my master?' He answered, `A hundred jugs of
olive oil.' He said to him, `Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make
it fifty.' Then he asked another, `And how much do you owe?' He
replied, `A hundred containers of wheat.' He said to him, `Take your
bill and make it eighty.' And his master commended the dishonest
manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the children of this age are
more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children
of light. And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of
dishonest wealth so that when it is gone, they may welcome you into the
eternal homes.
"Whoever is faithful in a very little is
faithful also in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is
dishonest also in much. If then you have not been faithful with the
dishonest wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? And if you
have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you
what is your own? No slave can serve two masters; for a slave will
either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and
despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth."

Family
and Children's Ministry-Godly Play
|
|
 Godly Play, the name
of our children's Sunday School, began last Sunday.
Godly play is open on Sundays from 10:30 am through 11:30 am. This enables the children to take
Communion with their parents. We invite St. Paul families to bring
their young children to our first lesson and invite a friend or
neighbor to come along and learn about Godly Play. Godly
Play teaches children the art of using Christian language - parable,
sacred story, silence and liturgical action - helping them become
more fully aware of the mystery of God's presence in their lives.
Godly Play is a creative and imaginative approach to Christian
nurture. For more information about the committee, contact Bonnie
Stroock at 760.324.7949. |
