From The Rector
|
| Joy or Torment?
This
week's Gospel is a difficult one. A quick search of the internet listed
many works of art or icons depicting either the poor man's sores or the
rich man's torment. I decided not to spice up my text with any of them.
First
this is not a bio-pic of 2 fellows. This is a scene that Jesus has
invented for a purpose. It is like a dream sequence in a television
show or a movie. It has a point, but it is not descriptive of a real
situation. We sometimes make it hard to get the real point because we
are stressing about the characters.
This
is an example of what we are used to in the Gospel's "the first shall
be last and the last shall be first." The realities of class and
economic distinctions are as real today as they were then and real life
can be just as graphic as Jesus story. We see a small part of the need
and suffering of real people when we host lunch guests of the Well in
the Desert every Friday.
The message I am drawing from this passage today is, "Really notice who is at my gate."
The
poor man was there every day and went unnoticed. The rich man only
noticed him when he had a use for him (dip his finger in water to
comfort me.) He still did not get it. Every human being is valuable in
God's sight as a beloved creation. Whenever we don't appreciate that
about another, we are in danger of losing our ability to connect with
God.
Jesus invites us
to prepare now for a joyful connection with God by noticing the people
around us and committing ourselves to change the equation that holds
some prisoner to poverty and exclusion.
Join us this weekend as we welcome everyone to the Abundant Life of Christ's table in worship.
Fr. Andrew

Featured Scripture
|
| Luke 16:19-31 (NRSV
Jesus said, "There
was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted
sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus,
covered with sores, who longed to satisfy his hunger with what fell
from the rich man's table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores.
The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with
Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, where he was
being tormented, he looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by
his side. He called out, `Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send
Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I
am in agony in these flames.' But Abraham said, `Child, remember that
during your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus in like
manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony.
Besides all this, between you and us a great chasm has been fixed, so
that those who might want to pass from here to you cannot do so, and no
one can cross from there to us.' He said, `Then, father, I beg you to
send him to my father's house-- for I have five brothers-- that he may
warn them, so that they will not also come into this place of torment.'
Abraham replied, `They have Moses and the prophets; they should listen
to them.' He said, `No, father Abraham; but if someone goes to them
from the dead, they will repent.' He said to him, `If they do not
listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even
if someone rises from the dead.'"

Family
and Children's Ministry-Godly Play
|
|
 Godly Play, the name
of our children's Sunday School, began last Sunday.
Godly play is open on Sundays from 10:30 am through 11:30 am. This enables the children to take
Communion with their parents. We invite St. Paul families to bring
their young children to our first lesson and invite a friend or
neighbor to come along and learn about Godly Play. Godly
Play teaches children the art of using Christian language - parable,
sacred story, silence and liturgical action - helping them become
more fully aware of the mystery of God's presence in their lives.
Godly Play is a creative and imaginative approach to Christian
nurture. For more information about the committee, contact Bonnie
Stroock at 760.324.7949. |
