Grace Comes To Tree Climbers
Zacchaeus was rich. He was privileged. He was outcast. He was a sinner. And he was short. --- All true.
He was also curious about Jesus. In his curiosity he tossed aside privilege, he ignored that he was rich and unwelcome. He seemed to have forgotten that he was a sinner. He even overcame his inability to see through the crowd due to his height.
I don't imagine that his tree climbing was exceedingly lovely. It might even have focused the attention of the crowd on him. It certainly brought him to Jesus' attention.
Can you imagine when grace happened?
Was it when Jesus gave the final comeuppance to the grumblers? Was it when Zacchaeus publicly changed his life and humiliated himself before the crowd? Was it when Jesus invited himself to dinner, when Jesus noticed him?
I like to think it was when his curiosity to find the missing piece in his life collided with the outrageous love of God as he scaled the Sycamore tree.
Those collisions happen all the time.
Lord, make me more curious about you.
Join some "tree-climbers" this weekend who are on the lookout for grace and love.
Fr. Andrew
p.s. As of this writing (Thurs Morning) our 1st granddaughter has not been born. Things are moving and we are invited to "trust the process."

Luke 19:1-10
Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through it. A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich. He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way. When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today." So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him. All who saw it began to grumble and said, "He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner." Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, "Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much." Then Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost."

ABUNDANT LIVING ACTION TEAM
|
|
Grace, Gratitude, Generosity
The blessing of growing in our faith can be summed up in this year's Stewardship celebration theme: GRACE, GRATITUDE, GENEROSITY.
God's GRACE fulfills us. God's GENEROSITY is available to us each and every day. The challenge for all of us is to recognize that God is here among our community in every way, inviting us to realize our own GRATITUDE in all we do.
The Abundant Living Action Team (ALAT) and the Action Team Associates (ATA) invite you to taste and see that the Lord-and our life and ministry at St. Paul in the Desert-is truly good!! The Festive Dinners that are planned for November 13th and 14th will be an excellent opportunity to stimulate the best element of our joy in God's Abundant Life. God is here in our "Faith Family" and at our "Faith Home." God is present as we attend to our daily lives. We are a grateful community. We urge you to respond positively to your invitation to share a meal and enjoy fellowship. This will indeed be a sign of displaying our collective GRACE, GRATITUDE, GENEROSITY.
If you have not yet received your invitation, please call...the parish office at 760.320.7488 or Cheryl Kelley at 760.778.1725. Tickets are available NOW after the Saturday and Sunday Services for the Festive Dinners. Don't forget to get yours! See you in Church!

United Thank Offering Sunday
|
|
November 7th
This year St. Paul of the Desert's Stewardship theme is: Grace, Gratitude, Generosity, which is: Love for what we have, and Love for what we have been given, and Love for The God that gives it. Nothing brings that closer to mind than the United Thank Offering, often referred to as UTO. It is the ministry of the Episcopal Church that provides a way for men, women, and children of the Episcopal Church to give daily thanks to God. The women of the UTO will receive your offerings, in the "Blue Box" or by check on the weekend of November 6 & 7th.

| Report Sexual Misconduct |
|
An Alert from Bp. Mathes
Our diocese values the tenet of our baptismal covenant to "respect the dignity of every human being." Part of the way we live into that is to train people in the prevention of sexual misconduct. Another part that goes hand-in-hand with training is reporting incidences of sexual misconduct. Our bishop, the Rt. Rev. James R. Mathes, takes reports seriously and investigates them thoroughly and confidentially. If you believe you have experienced sexual misconduct of any kind, please contact Bishop Mathes immediately: bishopmathes@edsd.org, 619.481.5450.
As defined by our Safeguarding God's People manual (pages 5-6), sexual abuse of a child is when parents or those responsible "commit or allow to be committed any illegal sexual act upon that child, including incest, rape, indecent exposure and prostitution, or to allow that child to be used in any sexually explicit visual material." Regarding adults, our manual states that, "it is particularly important to be careful in our relationships with those under our care or authority, where there may be a power differential. Where clergy or others in positions of authority are the subject of sexual advances by others, they must accept responsibility for maintaining those appropriate boundaries. Not to do so is an abuse of power and a betrayal of trust,".

| Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) |
|
Celebration!
Parents and kids are invited to join the Family and Childrens' Ministry of St. Paul's at the Palm Springs Art Museum on Saturday, October 30th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for a day of Festivities of Art, Music and Celebration of the Mexican Culture with Mariachi Azteca de Oro de Jose, Ballet Folklorico Sol de mi Tierra, art activities of: mask making, paper flower creation, bottle cap jewelry, printmaking, storytelling and traditional food.
The Day of the Dead is a Mexican religious holiday and a time of celebration and remembrance. In the United States, Day of the Dead events may combine altar-making, art and music in a community setting. The actual holiday occurs on November 2 in connection with All Saints' Day (November 1) and All Souls' Day (November 2).
Meet across the street from the front steps of the museum(NEW MEETING AREA THAN MENTIONED LAST WEEK) at 10:50 a.m. for this free day of art and crafts.
Everyone is invited to leave a memento or offering at the community altar on the museum's front steps at the 11 a.m. opening ceremony. Suggestions of a typical Mexican altar offering are: a picture, candles, flowers (Marigolds are custom), images of Virgin Mary, Mexican-style pastries, bread (pan de muertos), Coconut macaroons, sugar skulls, seasonal fruits, spinning tops, toy skulls, incense, etc. Call Claudia McVeigh for more details - 760.954.3622 (Changed from the number listed last week)

A "Call" for Altar Guild Ministry Members
|
|
This group of devout parishioners comes together with the primary task of serving God at God's altar, and in so doing praise God with hands and hearts. They are committed to diligent and reverent work. In general terms, the duty of the Altar Guild is to prepare everything necessary for the celebration of Holy Communion and the observance of the other Sacraments and Offices of the church. They feel it is an honor and privilege to serve God in the Sanctuary and at the altar. This ministry is comprised of women, men and young adults dedicated to caring for the church and altar. They work in teams that rotate weekly so that each member serves approximately one time per month. Some of the responsibilities are:
- The church is prepared and made welcoming to those attending all services;
- The altar is prepared for each service and cleaned up following each of the services;
- The care of the communion vessels and the linens used during the services.
Most of the duties are done behind the scenes. It is the dedicated service of the men and women of the Altar Guild that makes our worship services proceed smoothly.
The Altar Guild is ready to welcome new members to this very rewarding ministry. No experience is necessary. Training is ongoing. New members are supported by another member, so that you will never work alone. Everyone is invited...men, women, and young adults. Contact Kathy Kilmer at 760-325-0332 (kmkcc@aol.com).

CALL FOR USHERS |
|
Ushers, Front-line Hospitality Ambassadors
Ushers greet parishioners, newcomers and visitors as they arrive for worship, projecting warmth and hospitality with a smile, "hello" or "good morning." They distribute bulletins and help people find seating. Ushers introduce newcomers and visitors to parishioners who will be sitting near them during worship. They can further enhance a visitor's welcome by pairing them with a member who is available to show them to coffee hour or introduce them to the clergy. Ushers help worshipers move to and from the altar rail during communion in a smooth and orderly procession and accommodate anyone who may need special assistance anytime during the service. They also complete a worshiper headcount for every service. The Usher Ministry is comprised of men and women willing to devote their time and hospitality-focused talents to this important front-line function. Parishioners interested in volunteering for this Ministry should contact Ron Shepherd at 760.832.4709 or by email at ron_karen_shepherd@yahoo.com.

| Dessert at Desert SOS |

St. Paul in the Desert NOW serving Dessert Every Monday at Desert SOS

Six dedicated St. Paul's volunteers provided and/or served desserts to the guests of Roy's Desert Resource Center Monday evening. We now have volunteers on site at Roy's every Monday night, increasing our presence from our original arrangement of twice per month. The guests are so pleased that our parishioners provide them a variety and quality of dessert offerings. They express their appreciation repeatedly. Signup sheets are posted in the Parish Hall or call Hap Blaisdell at 760.323.5726.

| Family and Children's Ministry-Godly Play |
|
Godly Play, the name of our children's Sunday School, began last Sunday. Godly play is open on Sundays from 10:30 am through 11:30 am. This enables the children to take Communion with their parents. We invite St. Paul families to bring their young children to our first lesson and invite a friend or neighbor to come along and learn about Godly Play. Godly Play teaches children the art of using Christian language - parable, sacred story, silence and liturgical action - helping them become more fully aware of the mystery of God's presence in their lives. Godly Play is a creative and imaginative approach to Christian nurture. For more information about the committee, contact Bonnie Stroock at 760.324.7949.

| Meeting Space and Parish Events |
|
To schedule meeting space-
-for your group or ministry, please contact Br. Michael-Gregory at 760.320.7488, ext. 224, or email him at ministry.stpauls@dc.rr.com. He will reserve the space and will enter your meeting date, time, and location on the Parish's Master Calendar. The library and conference room are often utilized by staff during office hours and classes and other meetings are held in these rooms both during office hours and in the evenings and weekends. The chapel (located in the parish hall) and the condo (behind the church office) are also frequently used by parishioners and outside groups. It will be important for individuals and groups who wish to hold a meeting at the church to reserve meeting space in advance, particularly as we kick-off our fall programs, to ensure that the location you want is, in fact, available. Thank you.

| I Love To Tell The Story |
|
Our Church History
An exciting new project is taking shape to document the history of St. Paul in the Desert. We are seeking photographs of the church building and its members from the past 71 years. If you have photographs you would like to share with the archivist, please tag the photos with your name, the year (if you know it), and the names of the church members in the photos. Bring the photos to the church and we will digitally scan them and return them safely to you. In addition, we are looking for stories about the building of the church, its history, and member anecdotes. Thank you for helping us bring a bit of our church's past out of the attic and into the light.
