Playing Find and Seek
One of the tag lines in this week’s gospel reading from John is, “Come and see.” It is Jesus’ response to the interest of Andrew. Andrew finds his brother Peter and proclaims that he has found the Messiah.
Who is the seeker and who is the finder?
Scholars remind us that Andrew was a disciple of John, who directed him to Jesus. Jesus invited Andrew and he responded.
We may think that we are seeking, but we are rarely self-directed. We find what others point us to and we accept God’s gracious invitation. The best invitations are not doctrinal statements, but a welcome into a circle of Christian relationship, practice, and worship. “Come and see.” or “Yeah, I go to church. Join me this week.” or “I can see that you are hurting, I will pray for you.”
Last night I was inspired by our President’s invitation to enlarge our circle of compassion and live so that we make our children proud. His was a speech offered to a hurting community and grieving families of many faiths. It would preach well at St. Paul’s and it amplifies my reflections on this week’s scripture.
An invitation to “come and see” is an invitation to relationship with a compassionate community and a God of abundant love and generosity. I think we do that well, and we can do it even better. Each of us is one invitation away from directing someone to find the God who is seeking them.
Join us.
Fr. Andrew

John 1:29-42
John saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, "Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, `After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.' I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel." And John testified, "I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, `He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God."
The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, "Look, here is the Lamb of God!" The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi" (which translated means Teacher), "where are you staying?" He said to them, "Come and see." They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon. One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. He first found his brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which is translated Anointed). He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas" (which is translated Peter).

Please place your donation in the green Camp Stevens box in the parish hall, or leave a check,in the box, or in the collection plate and mark it “Camp Stevens Child”.

Desert SOS Dessert Ministry
|
|
Dear Friends of Desert SOS - We ended 2010 on a very good note. Desserts being served to up to 90 men, women and children EVERY Monday night (often the only dessert of the week), making 90 bag lunches, helping out where needed with serving main dishes (they have only two people on their kitchen staff), $250 or more monthly in undies, sox and seasonal needs each month, and over $1,100 in Christmas gift cards.
We need a minimum of 4 volunteers "serving" at Desert SOS every Monday night. The sign-up sheets on the bulletin board on the north wall of the Parish Hall are key to making this happen efficiently. PLEASE use it so we don't have to waste time looking for volunteers when none are needed. And remember that I check the refrigerator for items marked "for SOS" in the Parish Hall kitchen every Monday at 5 PM before I (or the team leader) leave for SOS.
For those of you wanting to drive out to the Roy's Desert Resource Center site, there is now a map on the bulletin board. It's not as far as it seems, but you can always carpool from St. Paul's.
Again, my thanks for all your efforts...and thanks from all those we support, Hap Blaisdell

At St. Paul in the Desert we want to welcome all worshipers to a place that is free of violence and bullying.
Physical, verbal or emotional violence against others or against oneself is not acceptable.
The Episcopal Cafe article on Cyber-bullying is available here.
"It Gets Better" is a series of video messages to encourage Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, or Transgender youth and let them know that they are loved as they are.
"A Blessing for Those Who Are Bullied" was written by the Rt. Rev. Steven Charleston, a Bishop of the Episcopal Church.
It is not enough to say "NO" to bullies. It is important to stand up for people and to provide resources for those who have been the targets.
