Be Attitude
All across the world this weekend, preachers who use the Revised Common Lectionary will be trying to shed new light on one of the most familiar of Gospel readings, the Beatitudes according to Matthew.
I have not yet had a revelation about this passage, and that has led me to fall back on trying to listen in a new way. In a sense, I am taking the advice of Pastor Brian Stoffregen who reminds his readers that this passage is the opening act of a significant teaching, the Sermon on the Mount. Context is everything and the Beatitudes are part of this teaching.
How do we as present disciples imagine this rather intimate instruction at Jesus’ feet. I imagine Jesus taking us aside, looking at us carefully, and beginning. He has sized us up and pegs what is on our minds. He speaks to our varied places on the spiritual journey, and encourages us.
As someone offered in Wednesday’s Bible Study: “Any one of us could be any one of these (poor in spirit, mourning, meek, hungry for the life with God, peacemakers, persecuted) or all of them – or none of them – at any given time. ”
My personal reflection is about where I am on that journey and what encouragement I long for.
This week, at each service, we celebrate a mile marker on the journey for some who have decided to join St. Paul’s. We will pray that we may be woven together joyfully in the fabric of faith, in the same way that we see Jesus disciples being woven together with him. The Beatitudes is the first act.
Join us.

Matthew 5:1-12
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
"Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
"Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
"Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Reporting Sexual Misconduct
|
|

The Episcopal Diocese of San Diego considers the reporting and investigation of sexual misconduct to be of critical importance and is committed to a fair, careful and thorough process in dealing with allegations.
The diocese deeply regrets sexual abuse and recognizes its moral and ethical obligation to seek out the truth, deal appropriately with misconduct and strive for justice, healing and peace. The diocese hopes that through the potentially painful reporting process, those results will be realized for all involved, particularly for the victims.
If you or someone you know has suffered sexual abuse in the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego, please report to Bishop Mathes.
Reporting
Reporting enables the diocese to protect the complainant, the respondent and the larger community. It also allows the diocese to assist with the spiritual, psychological and emotional needs of all concerned during and after the report of sexual misconduct. Bishop Mathes asks that those who believe they are victims of sexual misconduct or know of sexual misconduct; abuse of power by clergy; or child sexual abuse to report incidents immediately and directly to him:
The Rt. Rev. James R. Mathes Bishop bishopmathes@edsd.org 619-481-5450
Confidentiality
The confidentiality of the complainant, the accused and all other parties will be observed, provided it does not impede the diocese’s ability to investigate or take corrective action. All reports will be taken seriously and thoroughly investigated.

The New 2011 Altar and Narthex Flower Sign-up Sheets NOW AVAILABLE
Thank you - to all our parishioners who have signed up to provide the gracious gift of flowers for the altar and narthex. The floral arrangements are a endearing visible sign of your love to them and to your fellow parishioners. We need altar flowers for the weekend of February 6th and 27th to keep our altar blooming with the beauty that Woody Miller masterfully creates for us each week. At St. Paul in the Desert we want to welcome all worshipers to a place that is free of violence and bullying.
Physical, verbal or emotional violence against others or against oneself is not acceptable.
The Episcopal Cafe article on Cyber-bullying is available here.
"It Gets Better" is a series of video messages to encourage Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, or Transgender youth and let them know that they are loved as they are.
"A Blessing for Those Who Are Bullied" was written by the Rt. Rev. Steven Charleston, a Bishop of the Episcopal Church.
It is not enough to say "NO" to bullies. It is important to stand up for people and to provide resources for those who have been the targets.
